| Training and Consultation
In order to promote and increase the effectiveness of intervention and the capacity of Chinese organizations to provide services to children with autism, The Five Project provides training and consultation using two main models. These services are available to autism intervention programs in China, large foundations and institutes in China seeking to conduct autism services, as well as to educational and other organizations outside of China seeking to do work or training in China. Our Team Because our team consists of board members who have volunteered with children with autism in China since 1992, as well as worked in and conducted research in this field in the US, so we are both knowledgeable about best practices in autism as well as have a deep understanding of autism in Chinese society. Trainers and consultants have a background in both Applied Behavior Analysis and TEACCH methods of intervention. The training team consists of individuals who are Board Certified Behavior Analysts, and professionals with advanced degrees in Special Education. In addition, The Five Project has 4 Board members who are fluent in Mandarin Chinese, and have all lived, studied and worked in China for many years since 1992. Training Models ** Model 1: Direct Training for Autism Organizations in China The Five Project works with autism intervention organizations in China to design training programs that meet their needs, focusing on ensuring that curriculum and instruction meet best practice standards. Recent training programs in China have focused on TEACCH methods such as picture schedules and work systems, and basic instruction in ABA and discrete trial teaching. We provide training that can last between 1 day and several weeks; we believe a longer period of hands-on training is most beneficial for teachers, but we work with each organization to find the best model. All training is provided in Mandarin Chinese. ** Model 2: Consultation to Educational Organizations, Foundations and Agencies (Chinese and international) We provide consultation to both Chinese organizations that seek to enter the field of autism but do not have a relevant background, as well as to American or other international education/autism organizations that plan to travel to China but have very limited knowledge about China and autism intervention there. Training is provided in Mandarin Chinese or in English, depending on the target audience. · Consultation to Chinese organizations: Organizations such as foundations and research institutes in China seek out The Five Project for guidance on effective ways to provide intervention to children with autism, and training to teachers. The Five Project works with each organization to design a model of consultation appropriate to their needs. · Consultation to American/international organizations: The Five Project is equipped to meet the needs of professionals and educational organizations from outside of China, including the U.S., Europe, etc., who seek consultation in preparing for training programs or other endeavors in China. Based on our years of experience and research in the field of special education in China, we provide training, information, and/or resources to ensure that non-Chinese professionals who are preparing to go to China to teach, train, or volunteer, are able to provide information that is useful and relevant to Chinese culture, society, and persons (parents and professionals) delivering educational interventions to children and youth with autism Please note, in addition to these two models of services, The Five Project also provides Chinese language materials, including written and video, on its website.
